Hillcrest School Profile

Hillcrest School (HIS) is a college preparatory, private Christian school sponsored by the various Christian organizations working in Papua, Indonesia.  Current enrollment is 146 students in grades Pre-1st through 12th.

The mission of Hillcrest School is to provide the children of expatriate workers of Christian organizations, along with Indonesian and international students, with an education grounded in the Truth, which will enable the students to thrive in all aspects of life.

The main campus of over 40 acres is located on a plateau in the scenic foothills of Mount Cyclops, overlooking Lake Sentani, the regional airport, and the town of Sentani.  Sentani, approximately 40 km from Papua’s provincial capital, Jayapura, has a population of around 50,000 people.

Besides the regular classrooms, HIS has a library for all grades, three indoor sports facilities, a soccer field, an auditorium with kitchen facilities, outdoor lunch areas, a playground, a band room, a clinic, two computer labs, a science lab, drama and art classrooms,  a teacher resource room, administrative offices, and a dormitory.

CURRICULUM & EXTRACURRICULAR

HIS is divided into Elementary, Middle School and High School. The school year is from August to May.

Courses are based on U.S. curriculum standards, and instruction is in English. As staff are available, courses in grammar, writing, and history are offered in the mother tongue (MT) of non-native English speaking students.

We offer College Board Advanced Placement courses, available to high school students in grades 11 and grade 12. Advanced Placement courses are currently available for English Language and Composition, Calculus AB, Statistics, Pre-Calculus, and Comparative Government and Politics.

Extracurricular opportunities include athletics, music, and clubs. Sports teams at the middle and high school level include volleyball, basketball, and futsal (indoor soccer) and outdoor soccer.

Students can graduate with a “College Preparatory” diploma, which fulfills the requirements of universities worldwide. HIS also offers general and modified diplomas and Indonesian diploma.

Due to the small size of our graduating classes, Hillcrest School does not provide class rank information on transcripts.

STANDARDIZED TESTS

The NWEA MAP Growth standardized tests are given each semester to all students in grades 1-8.

Every October, the PSAT 8/9 is given to all students in grades 8 and 9, and the PSAT/NMSQT is given to all grade 10-12 students. The SAT and ACT are offered each semester, but are not required.

PROGRAM AT A GLANCE

AUXILIARY STUDIES PROGRAM

The school offers a comprehensive program giving students with diagnosed learning needs the tools to reach their full potential. Special Education and English Language Development classes are offered as staff is available.

COMMUNITY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY/AWARDS

Students receive an award for each year they complete more than 30 hours of community service. Community service is any voluntary service that focuses outwardly and contributes to the wellbeing of the community, which includes HIS, expatriate and national communities, with no remuneration.

CULTURAL EXPERIENCE

Papua’s unique cultures and environment offer opportunities for learning outside the classroom.  Field trips to the beach to observe coral reefs and fish are routinely included in the year’s activities.  Once each year for two weeks, the entire high school student body visits an interior village location to study different ways of life, apply anthropological learning, and help with community development projects.

INDEPENDENT STUDY

Students may take courses not offered at HIS as Independent Study (IS). These courses are supervised by on-site qualified personnel and approved by the principal. Courses are limited to students in grade 11 and grade 12. Online courses through accredited high schools and universities are not considered as IS, but as a transfer credit.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

Membership in the NHS is highly selective. Beyond the GPA requirement of a 3.5, students must complete 30 hours of volunteer community service and demonstrate a strong commitment to the four pillars of NHS: scholarship, character, service and leadership.

SLIC

Student Leadership Initiative Committee is made up of Grade 12 students who wish to lead the high school by planning weekly chapels and regular spiritual emphasis events.

STUDENT COUNCIL

High School students can serve on Student Council, organizing student activities, community events, and developing school spirit.
